Carolina's Stroumbo House
We all marvel that Carolina left England as a young woman to spend years finding the perfect place to live on the Greek islands. At the time Amorgos was about as remote a plce as one could find, Aigiali was the less-traveled Northern end of the island and Langatha was a far-off mountain village, accesible only by a long pathway known affectionately as "The Muletrack". And yet, Langatha turned out to be not remote enough for Carolina. Around the time roads and elctricity arrived in Langatha, Carolina took on another building project. Down in the Gorge between Langatha and Tholaria there was a deserted village called Stroumbo. Carolina took on one of the ruins and turned it into her "Summer Home", where she could truly get away from it all.

She spent many years making it special with unique built features, stonework and special outdoor spaces perfect for reading, writing and contemplation. In her lifetime the village never had any amenities of modern living, no electricity, no road, relying only on a small solar panel to charge her portable radio and mobile phone.
As a result of Carolina's building efforts several other houses in Stroumbo were purchased and re-built, revitalizing the small hamlet. The path has been significant;y improved, making it an easier 15-minute walk from Langatha, and there is even talk of the village council running underground electrical service to the village.
Intrepid visitors who want to experience Greek island life as it has been for centuries can rent this incredibly unique home. They will draw their own water from the rain-fed cistern, they will carry in their own supplies (or hire a donkey for cartage), they will light lamps at night and light fires for warmth if needed. But most importantly, they will experience the kind of peace and quiet that is almost imposible to find anywhere in the modern world.
The house is now maintained by Carolina's Nephew, Mark Thomas and interested guests should contact him directly at
